After finding a GREAT cigar shop, the trip to Jekyll/St. Simon was MUCH better.  Not only was the owner nice, informative and helpful about cigars; so also gave the BEST referrals for FOOD!

As you are aware from an earlier blog I had a Zino Platinum XS that I LOVED.  The next night I had a Hoyo de Monterey Excalibur that was the best cigar I have ever had (barring the - shhh – Cubans)!  The taste throughout was smooth without any “tones” that I didn’t like.  The last night I had an Ashton . . . a chick stick; it was alright, nothing to write home about though.

I made some purchases at the Island Cigar Guy (no website, YET!):  a humidor ; I decided to get an upgraded hygrometer as the ones that come with humidors generally “suck”.  I am now seasoning the humidor; tonight the new cigars should have a home!  I also purchased an Avo, an Ashton and a second (irregular) for Myself and treated sled to an Indios Robusto.  AND when I got home, boy had purchased a “few” A. Fuente Gran Reserva and left them on the counter for Me; SOOOO glad I purchased a humidor!

The owner of the cigar shop also recommended Blackwater Grill for dinner:  both the food and the service were exceptional – not stuffy, fun and easy – like a vacation should be.   He also recommended Barbara Jeans for lunch:  a little noisey, but the crab soup was TO DIE FOR!

So the drive from ATL is long and boring; make sure you are traveling with people you like!

We spent some time in the marketplace in town; was nice, if uneventful. Then we went to the strip along the water . . . really, not that interesting, hard to navigate, shops are mostly t-shirts – candy – a mediocre food. Was VERY disappointed with the cigar shop . . . NO humidor for their cigars, selection MUCH less than I can find within 3 miles of My house. We stopped in to Tapas by Anna hungry, dehydrated and hot. Thought we would get A LITTLE something to tide us over until we could get a real meal. Service was lacking; but food was good enough that we decided to stay for dinner. The stuffed shrimp, fried zucchini, stuff mushrooms, house salad (uninteresting, but FRESH with a tortilla bowl), and she crab soup were all great. Perhaps not traditional tapas, but small portions . . . and more like something a GREAT home cook would make than a fancy chef. Overall . . . VERY good. Read the rest of this entry »
