Saturday night, sled and I decided to enjoy a cigar and ignore that it was 56° outside. We bundled up and did our usual thing . . . sat on the deck with our cigar tray. I did slightly reorganize the lounge chairs and the table for a better experience. We are discussing getting an outdoor heater so that we can continue to enjoy the cigars as the temperature drops (yeah!) for winter.
sled was having “special import” cigar that turned out to be lackluster; truly a shame. I, on the other hand, found another 5! The La Fontana pucci was incredible. This is small, long, thin stick with a mellow (perhaps leathery) flavor. To Me it was mild; but they say it is medium bodied. I like the Alec Bradley . . . so maybe that is the difference. sled’s comment on the AB was that he was MAN ENOUGH to smoke that and immediately spit it out. So, I guess I like LOTS of flavor. Really, this was a great smoke that I truly enjoyed. The ONLY thing that perhaps could have been better was the ash. I like Birch looking ash; this one was dark grey.

Overall:

.
Link: Cuesta Rey Maduro.
Size: Centenario No. 5
Filler: Dominican Rebuplic
Binder: Dominican Republic
Lighting:

. EASY to light.
Ash:

. OMG, PERFECT. Looked like a gorgeous birch tree AND held on forever!
Burn:

. It burned nicely and had lots of smoke.
Taste:

. Strong heavy leathery flavor.
Other: At the beginning, I wanted to give this cigar a 4.25. After considering all the aspects the I rate and my experience I had only ONE option! 5. I would put it up there with my other favorites: My Family, Tatueje, and Alec Bradley.
See sled’s review of Don Pepin Garcia Tabacos Baez.
Overall:

.
Link: Sancho Panza Double Maduro.
Size: Cervantes
Lighting:

. EASY to light.
Ash:

. Nice, but nothing special.
Burn:

. It burned nicely and had lots of smoke.
Taste:

. Strong heavy flavor that I liked. Was a good basic, heavy cigar; nothing special about the flavor.
Other: I didn’t try the nose tasting as I have found it is too much for me with the heavier flavored cigars. The band is so uninspiring that it is a turn off; for both sled and I.
Overall:

.
Link: Olivia
Size: Lancero
Lighting:

. EASY to light. This was My first attempt at lighting My own and it was very easy! I only had to relight once and it was because I left for a “few” minutes.
Burn:

. It burned FAST and the ash fell off after only an inch.
Taste:

. Strong spicy flavor (not as strong as the Alec Bradley) that I really liked.
Other: I found it MUCH more difficult to do the “nose” tasting with this cigar. I have another in the humidor so perhaps another try will give different results.
The High Protocol group on Fetlife started a new REAL-time group: PLEASE. This group had its first event last weekend. Hosted by Lady HotchKiss with an erotic reading, cigars and brandy, and some GREAT (if I don’t say so myself) food!
Mom was in attendance and was able to meet My friends and ask questions about living in the “lifestyle”. What she learned was that we are essentially normal people with nonmainstream interests; that she would LOVE to be friends with Ms. Martha; that My friends were warm, outgoing, willing to discuss, and highly educated about who they are and what they want.
Nikita The Writer read two passages from her book “Tales From the Whipping Post” and one passage from Wolffie’s book. Nikita’s stories are a blend of naivete, charm, and raunch; just like the author. Wolffie’s excerpt was expertly written, melodic, forceful, and a he has quite a unique voice. As if that is not enough, English is his second language!
The GREAT food included Vodka Ginger Lemonade, brownies, and pistachio white-chocolate cookies (recipe still being hunted down).
There were a variety of cigars being smoked. I had the opportunity to try an Alec Bradley Tempus Creo and LOVED it. The spicy (peppery) flavor was OUTSTANDING; even if sled thought it was TOO much. Thank you RUMZ for sharing your treasure.
Since it was a “House” Warming I also got a variety of gifts: from Courvoisier to Dom Perignon to a steel reinforced leather paddle. Nothing like a BDSM “Warming” gift!
Thank you all for such a wonderful evening.
As some may remember, when I returned home from Jekyll Island My boy had left me a gift of 5 A. Fuente Gran Reserva Petite Corona cigars. Over the weekend I had an opportunity to smoke one; simply FABulous! Could not have asked for more; at least from a cigar! Four left; I am looking forward to them.
I did go out on Saturday and look at a few addtitonal cigar shops in Atlanta: Ash’s and Edward’s. Both had cigar I had no seen before. My next adventure is to try a londales; this is a size of cigar. It is about the same ring size as a Petite Corona; but MUCH longer.
Thank you, boy!
Ok, ENOUGH postings about cigars . . . something different for the next post.
After finding a GREAT cigar shop, the trip to Jekyll/St. Simon was MUCH better. Not only was the owner nice, informative and helpful about cigars; so also gave the BEST referrals for FOOD!
As you are aware from an earlier blog I had a Zino Platinum XS that I LOVED. The next night I had a Hoyo de Monterey Excalibur that was the best cigar I have ever had (barring the - shhh – Cubans)! The taste throughout was smooth without any “tones” that I didn’t like. The last night I had an Ashton . . . a chick stick; it was alright, nothing to write home about though.
I made some purchases at the Island Cigar Guy (no website, YET!): a humidor ; I decided to get an upgraded hygrometer as the ones that come with humidors generally “suck”. I am now seasoning the humidor; tonight the new cigars should have a home! I also purchased an Avo, an Ashton and a second (irregular) for Myself and treated sled to an Indios Robusto. AND when I got home, boy had purchased a “few” A. Fuente Gran Reserva and left them on the counter for Me; SOOOO glad I purchased a humidor!
The owner of the cigar shop also recommended Blackwater Grill for dinner: both the food and the service were exceptional – not stuffy, fun and easy – like a vacation should be. He also recommended Barbara Jeans for lunch: a little noisey, but the crab soup was TO DIE FOR!
So the drive from ATL is long and boring; make sure you are traveling with people you like!
We spent some time in the marketplace in town; was nice, if uneventful. Then we went to the strip along the water . . . really, not that interesting, hard to navigate, shops are mostly t-shirts – candy – a mediocre food. Was VERY disappointed with the cigar shop . . . NO humidor for their cigars, selection MUCH less than I can find within 3 miles of My house. We stopped in to Tapas by Anna hungry, dehydrated and hot. Thought we would get A LITTLE something to tide us over until we could get a real meal. Service was lacking; but food was good enough that we decided to stay for dinner. The stuffed shrimp, fried zucchini, stuff mushrooms, house salad (uninteresting, but FRESH with a tortilla bowl), and she crab soup were all great. Perhaps not traditional tapas, but small portions . . . and more like something a GREAT home cook would make than a fancy chef. Overall . . . VERY good. Read the rest of this entry »
