The culture in the United States is focused on wealth generation. We see ourselves as living in a capitalist society before a democracy; for instance, most of our government statistics are focused on us as employees and consumers not citizens. There is LOTS of talk about jobs, money, spending; VERY little about the joy and responsibility of voting and jury duty.

This issue of Personal Development is very focused on wealth; creating a better YOU will bring wealth is the general message. Some of the details I agree with, but overall I don’t think there is/should be a connection. When you “build a better you” it should be for YOU; not for something else. Especially not to get rich!

So, when I read the Mistress (lol) of Imagination’s note I was pleasantly surprised. She talks about “Your World of Wealth” having five areas of wealth or value: relationships, health, nature, knowledge, inner wealth.

This sort of wealth I understand. They are about things I value connectivity, being fit, letting nature exist and be, growing, and knowing ourselves. Imagine what this sort of wealth would bring to each of us. Makes me wonder how/why we ended up with a world based on money.

Inner wealth, is knowing yourself. One of best, most interesting, and frustrating things about knowing yourself . . . you CHANGE! It isn’t that one day you so; got it, I KNOW me. Not that easy, it is a continuous journey to understand where you are, why you do things, and to find ways to change the things you don’t like. Change can be frustrating, difficult and take MUCH longer than we would like. Trust Me; I know. And where you end up is unpredictable. Once you start on the path, you make take forks that you didn’t even know existed! This is why I don’t like our current fascination with setting goals . . . you tend to miss the unexpected opportunities . . .and they can be the BEST ones!

One Response to “Kinds of Wealth?”

  • Joseph:

    Thank You LadyHotchKiss,
This is one of the best segments. Many of us have forgotten about our inner wealth. I am guilty of trying equate happiness with material wealth. That never creates happiness. To improve our innerself is where it is at, and I totally agree at least for me that our innerself is changing. I personally have changed more in the last six months than in the previous thirty years. Thank You Beautiful Lady. I owe You in no small part for that.
    Joseph
